The story behind Nyumba Mac

From a refugee camp to a classroom in Kenya

His father survived a prisoner of war camp. His family crossed the South China Sea with nothing. Viet Mac grew up knowing exactly what it means to start from zero, and what education can do when someone finally opens the door.

Viet's parents were Vietnamese boat people. They fled after the fall of Saigon, his father having endured years as a prisoner of war. They arrived in America with no money, no language, and no guarantee of anything. Only the belief that a better life was possible if their children could learn.

That belief worked. Viet grew up, built a life, and found himself with something his parents never had: the privilege of perspective. He had seen the world. He had seen what access to education does for a child, and what the absence of it does to a community.

Nyumba Mac is his answer to that. Not charity. Not pity. A platform built with deep respect for the resilience of underserved communities, because Viet knows that resilience personally. His family had it. The children of Kenya have it. All they need is the door.

My father survived a war with nothing but his will. I was given the world. The least I can do is pass something forward.

Support the mission

Nyumba Mac is 100% free — and always will be.

Every lesson, quiz, and certificate on this platform costs learners nothing. But building and improving it takes real resources — better content, more subjects, audio support, and offline access for communities with limited connectivity.

If Nyumba Mac has meant something to you, or you believe every curious mind deserves access to quality education, consider contributing. Even a small amount goes a long way.
